Dimensions:
Length: 115 mm (4.5 inches)
Ring Gauge: 50
Shape: Petit Robusto
Appearance:
The Trinidad Media Luna looks very beautiful, it is just a bit smaller than a Robusto cigar. It has the traditional pigtail that is present on every Trinidad cigar’s head. The wrapper has a nice light brown Colorado color. The construction appears to be perfect; the triple head cap is seamless and the wrapper shows very little veins and has a very smooth feeling to it.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
Once the pigtail is twisted off, the Trinidad Media Luna reveals a great draw, with just the right amount of resistance. It leaves a nice and spicy tobacco taste on the lips, with some herbal tones.
Burn/ Draw
Once lit, the Media Luna starts off with flavors of young tobacco, with some bitterness, which is expected because it is a rather young cigar. The feeling in mouth is very good nonetheless and the construction proves that it is indeed of great quality, the draw being spot-on.
Initial third:
The Trinidad Media Luna opens up beautifully, with a very good mouth feeling. The typical Trinidad flavors are present: plenty of earth, mild spices, herbal notes and also coffee. There is a bit of spices on the retro hale but the finish remains mild nevertheless. Some sweetness is also coming and going at times, with some kind of butter crumpet flavor or honey on a toasted crumble. The harshness that was noticeable when lighting-up the cigar has gone and the overall feeling is very enjoyable. The body is noticeably a notch higher than the regular Trinidad (Vigia, Fundadores or Coloniales). The construction continues to be amazing, the draw remaining excellent while the burn, despite being a bit wavy, requires no attention.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the Trinidad Media Luna’s flavor profile evolves slightly, and becomes a bit more complex, with the addition of some nuttiness. The spiciness in the finish has completely disappeared, so the overall flavors are mostly herbal and earthy with a bit of coffee. The middle section of the cigar is very enjoyable and helped with a perfect construction, the burn has straightened up while the dark gray ash is building up nicely at the foot and holding on well. The burn has also straightened up, the draw remains very good. The body is just under the full mark.
Final third:
In the final third, more flavors are adding to the complexity of the Trinidad Media Luna. The earth is the most noticeable flavor, there is still a lot of leather, of herbal notes (with some hints of citrus) and now some beautiful shortbread is added to the mix, while the coffee has receded to the background. The spices make a welcome come back on the retro hale. The flavors are very consistent and work well together while the body of the cigar never makes it past the full mark, it is a great cigar to enjoy after a good dinner.
In short, despite being a quite new release, any Cuban cigar aficionado ought to try the Trinidad Media Luna, which is a contender for a Top 10 Habanos of current production.
Smoking time: 40 minutes – 60 minutes.
