Dimensions:
Length: 125 mm (4.92 inches)
Ring Gauge: 56
Shape: Robusto
Appearance:
The Trinidad Topes looks amazing, it is a big cigar, with a beautiful Maduro wrapper which appears of perfect construction at first sight. The wrapper is not as dark as Limited-Edition cigars, but with a fairly oily nice chocolate brown wrapper and a few minor veins, we can’t wait to get started. It feels good in hand, evenly packed without any soft spot. As every Trinidad, the Topes sports a pigtail at the head of the cigar which, if removed properly, allows you to smoke it without needing a cutter.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The aroma at first it has some leather, some sweetness from chocolate and molasses and also hints of nuttiness on the wrapper, while there is some cocoa and some sweet chocolate on the foot as well as barnyard.
Burn/ Draw
The draw is spot-on, with the perfect amount of resistance. The cold draw reveals typical Cuban flavors with some spices, dry berries, bread and citrus. There is also some sweet cardboard kind of taste, but not in a bad way, just a dry taste. Once the cigar is lit, the Trinidad Topes starts off with plenty of cedar, there is also a bit of chocolate and some pepper. The first puffs are very pleasant overall and the smoke leaves very nice aromas on the palate. The draw is cool, the burn line is even and huge billows of smoke are released at every puff.
Initial third:
The Trinidad Topes starts off beautifully with some Cuban cedar and some sweetness from molasses or a ripe fruit kind of sweetness. There are also some cocoa flavors, sometimes dark and rich cocoa, sometimes more like sweet cocoa bean. There is also some leather in the background, but slowly become more prominent, which is expected from a Trinidad. The tobacco flavor is also rich and mature, kind of toasted tobacco. There are also some notes of pita bread, nuts, berries while there is a good amount of pepper in the background. The flavors are all very well balanced and it is very enjoyable overall, flavor is at a medium-full level, while the strength is at the medium mark. The cigar burns very well and evenly, so far, the construction on the Topes is flawless.
Middle third:
The flavors of the Topes evolve slightly over the second third, the rich and mature tobacco dominates the middle of the cigar, along with deep and strong leathery and earthy flavors. The pepper recedes to the background but is pretty noticeable on the finish. Some notes of coffee appear while there are also hints of wheat, lemongrass and saltiness on the nose. Some sweet chocolate is still present in the background. The overall strength of the cigar remains at the medium mark and the burn remains amazing and effortless.
Final third:
The flavors intensify slightly going into the last third. The flavors are even richer, with a mix of deep earth, leather, some cocoa, coffee, fruits, roasted nuts and saltiness. Overall, it is very creamy and very well balanced, in a happy sweet-sour marriage. The flavor profile is simply phenomenal, paired with a perfect construction and burn, makes it a very good Trinidad cigar. The strength is between medium and medium-full towards the end of the cigar.
In summary: a phenomenal after-dinner cigar, a true Trinidad that every aficionado ought to try.
